{"id":2259,"date":"2018-01-16T14:23:19","date_gmt":"2018-01-16T14:23:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/buildsoftsupport.com\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=2259"},"modified":"2025-10-02T15:29:43","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T15:29:43","slug":"can-i-model-castellated-cellular-beams-in-diamonds","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/support.buildsoft.eu\/nl\/knowledge-base\/can-i-model-castellated-cellular-beams-in-diamonds\/","title":{"rendered":"Can I model castellated\/ cellular beams in Diamonds?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the global analysis (determing M,N,V in a construction) I-shaped cross sections with reduced properties (calculated near the openings) can be used:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Find the <em>parent section<\/em> in the Diamonds section library and adjust its height H.<\/li>\n<li>Adjust the properties I<sub>y<\/sub>, W<sub>y<\/sub> (elastic and plastic),\u00a0I<sub>T<\/sub>\u00a0and A<sub>Vz<\/sub> (substract opening from the\u00a0properties of the gross section)<\/li>\n<li>Adjust the imperfection factor for lateral torsional buckling to\n<ul>\n<li>curve c (=0,49) for double symmetric\u00a0castellated beams (circular or hexagonal openings) made from hot rolled parent sections<\/li>\n<li>curve d (=0,76) for all others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Check that the cross section of the <em>tee section<\/em>\u00a0(part of the web above and below the opening) is less conservative than the cross section of the entire beam. If not, also adjust the cross section classification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Next to the usual checks from\u00a0EN1993-1-1 (implemented\u00a0in Diamonds), the additional checks mentioned below also apply (not implemented in Diamonds). These additional checks are mainly local and relate to the <em>tee section<\/em> (part of the web above and below the opening) and the <em>web post<\/em> (part of the web between two openings).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Buckling of compressed tee due to global bending<\/li>\n<li>Resistance of tees in Vierendeel bending<\/li>\n<li>Web post shear, bending and buckling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also note that the deformation will be larger than calculated with Diamonds because of the effects for Vierendeel\u00a0shear deformation along the openings.\u00a0This can be calculated with a Vierendeel (framework) analogy.<\/p>\n<p>A new Eurocode part is in the making about these beams (EN1993-1-13: Steel beams with large web opening).
