During an elastic analysis, Diamonds will determine the internal forces, elastic stresses and the elastic deformations in a steel structure. During the design, it will check if the chosen cross-section (HEA, IPE, …) are capable of resisting those internal forces.
In EN 1993-1-1 this design consists of two parts:
- verification of the strength (will the bar break or not?)
- verification of the stability (will the bar buckle or not?)
To perform these calculations we need additional parameters next to the section properties. EN 1993-1-1 gives rules to calculate these additional parameters for basic shapes (I, H, T, L, O, ▯). But no rules are provided for non basic shapes (🞥, double L, △, or combinations of the basic shapes… = Section Utility cross-sections).
If you do wish to design cross-sections made in Section Utility, then you should enter the parameters after the button ‘Imposed section classes’:

An overview of all the required parameters can be found in this article.
