When you click on , Section utlity is not starting. Nothing happens.

Solution

Close Diamonds and restart Diamonds

Wrong representation of sigma-section in Section utility

When opening a Sigma 200 – section in Section Utility, it’s representation is wrong.

Solution

Download the new SectionUtility.exe.
Do not change the name of the file!
Replace the old SectionUtility.exe in the Diamonds-installation folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\BuildSoft\Diamonds2019\Section Utility) with the new one.

This bug will be fixed in Diamonds 2020.

How to make a custom section

Select the line(s) and click on .
Choose .
Click on . Section Utility will open.
If Section Utility is not starting, close Diamonds and restart Diamonds.
Define the desired profile. Topics that can help you:
- The examples (=§3) in the Section-Utility manual
- How to cut a section in half
- How to make an encased H-section
- How to make and HSS section filled with concrete
Make sure to uncheck the winks when composing the defined cross section. This will trigger Section Utility to calculate the elastic and plastic cross-section properties.
Why aren't the winks unchecked by default?
- Assume you draw a line in Diamonds and assign an HEA 300 to it.
- You select the line and open the section properties .
  The properties in this dialog are often rounded values because they come from a catalogue.
  While Section Utility calculates the (elastic and plastic) properties based on geometrical formulas. The Section Utility results are therefor exact and differ a little from the catalogue values.
- If you would send the cross-section to Section Utilty, then close Section Utilty without changing anything to the cross-section, you expect to still have the same cross-section properties, right? Well that’s because the winks are checked by default.
If you want to perform a steelcheck on the section, don’t forget to define the imposed classes.
Close Section Utility. Take the section back to Diamonds.

Composed (steel-concrete sections) according to Eurocode 4

Can Diamonds calculate composed sections (for example: HSS with concrete poured into it)?

No, the design rules for composed section are in Eurocode 4. Eurocode 4 is not implemented in Diamonds. 4 alternatives:

Verify if the materials are well assigned. It often happens that SHS-sections have a concrete quality as material instead of a steel quality.
If the model contains Section Utility profiles: define the reinforcement zones in Section Utility

No steel verification for Section Utility profile

The verification/ unity check of user defined cross-sections (using the tool Section Utility) is only supported for steel cross-sections according to Eurocode.

Problem

There are no strength/ stability results available for a custom cross-section (Section utility) after a steelcheck.

Solution

In order to perform a steelcheck, elastic and plastic section properties are not sufficient. Eurocode requires additional parameters. Eurocode gives rules to determine those additional parameters in case of I, T, H, O, L and tubular cross-sections. But for a combination of these cross-sections or for a random cross-section there are not rules given. Eurocode will have to be interpreted in order to determine a meaningful value for these additional parameters. And that is a job for the end user. The additional parameters can be defined in Section Utility:

Open the cross section Section Utility
Click on the button “Imposed classes” at the right bottom side
Enter the requested parameters. An overview can be found in the download links below.

Probleem

Na een staalcontrole zijn er geen resultaten beschikbaar voor een zelf samengesteld (uit Section Utility) profiel.

Oplossing

Om een staalcontrole te kunnen uitvoeren, heb je niet enkel elastische en plastische eigenschappen nodig. Eurocode vereist nog bijkomende eigenschappen. Voor standaard I, T, H, O, L, en buisvormige doorsnede geeft Eurocode regels om die bijkomende eigenschappen te bepalen. Maar niet voor gecombineerde doorsnede of willekeurige doorsnedes. Om de bijkomende parameters voor deze doorsnedes een zinvolle waarde te geven, moet Eurocode geïnterpreteerd worden. En dat is de taak van de gebruiker. De bijkomende eigenschappen kunnen gedefinieerd worden in Section Utility:

Open de samengestelde doorsnede in Section Utility.
Aan de recht kant, klik op de knop “Opgelegde sectieklassen”.
In het dialoogvenster dat verschijnt zie je alle parameters die bepaald moeten worden. Een overzicht kan je vinden in de bestanden onderaan dit artikel.

Problème

Après une vérification acier, aucun résultat n’est disponible pour une section composée ( = profil de Section Utility).

Solution

Pour pouvoir effectuer une vérification acier, vous n’avez pas seulement besoin de propriétés élastiques et plastiques. L’Eurocode requiert des propriétés supplémentaires. Pour les sections standard I, T, H, O, L et tubulaires, l’Eurocode fournit des règles pour déterminer ces propriétés supplémentaires. Mais pas pour les sections combinées ou les sections arbitraires. Pour donner aux paramètres supplémentaires de ces sections une valeur significative, l’Eurocode doit être interprété. Et c’est le travail de l’utilisateur. Les propriétés supplémentaires peuvent être définies dans Section Utility :

Ouvriez la section composée en Section Utility.
Sur le côté droit, cliquez sur le bouton ‘Classes imposées…‘.
Dans la boîte de dialogue qui apparaît, vous verrez tous les paramètres qui doivent être déterminés. Un aperçu peut être trouvé dans les fichiers au bas de cet article.
