<h2>Solution</h2>
<p>Diamonds needs a closed circumference to create a plate. If that is not the case, the plate definition is &#8216;broken&#8217;: you get an &#8216;invalid&#8217; plate (or wall).</p>
<p>Diamonds (since version 2023) selects these invalid plates when you generate the mesh.</p>
<ul>
<li>Click &#8216;OK&#8217; to close the message.</li>
<li>Fix the invalid plate(s).
<ul>
<li>Either you delete them and create them again</li>
<li>Either you run the <a href="https://support.buildsoft.eu/knowledge-base/how-does-the-projection-function-work/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">projection function</a> on the circumference although this doesn&#8217;t always fix the issue.</li>

<h2>Oplossing</h2>
<p>Diamonds heeft een gesloten omtrek nodig om een plaat te genereren. Als dat niet het geval is, is de plaatdefinitie &#8216;kapot&#8217; en heb je een ongeldige plaat.</p>
<p>Diamonds selecteert deze ongeldige platen wanneer je de mesh genereert.</p>
<ul>
<li>Klik op &#8216;OK&#8217; om de melding te sluiten.</li>
<li>Verwijder de ongeldige platen:
<ul>
<li>Ofwel selecteer je de ongeldige platen, verwijder je ze en genereer je ze opnieuw.</li>
<li>Ofwel laat je de <a href="https://support.buildsoft.eu/knowledge-base/how-does-the-projection-function-work/#NL">projectfunctie </a>lopen op de omtrekken van deze platen. Hoewel dit niet steeds helpt.</li>

<p>Diamonds a besoin d&#8217;une circonférence fermée pour créer une plaque. Si ce n&#8217;est pas le cas, la définition de la plaque est &#8216;cassé&#8217; : vous obtenez une plaque (ou un mur) &#8216;invalide&#8217;.</p>
<p>Diamonds (depuis la version 2023) sélectionne ces plaques invalides lorsque vous générez le maillage.</p>
<ul>
<li>Cliquez sur &#8216;OK&#8217; pour fermer le message.</li>
<li>Corriger la plaque invalide

<h2>Solution</h2>
<p>This error can have 2 main causes: either an error in the geometry or either unsuitable mesh size. The latter occurs less often.</p>
<h3>Cause 1: error in the geometry</h3>
<p>Many things can go wrong in the geometry. We&#8217;ve listed the most common mistakes.</p>
<ul>
<li>Make sure there are no tie rods on surface borders.<br />
A tie rod can only be loaded with axial force. But when a tie rod is on the edge of a surface, it can no longer meet that axial behaviour.</li>
<li>Check for invalid plates.
<ul>
<li>If you have a large model, try to isolate the elements causing the problem.<br />
Remove a part of the structure, try to generate the mesh. If the error remains, remove more of the structure and try again until you only have a small part left. If the error is gone, you removed to much.</li>
<li>When use the short cut <kbd>ALT</kbd> + click on a plate, you select the plate together with its borders.</li>
<li>Do <kbd>ALT</kbd> + click on each plate and check if the selected border makes sence.<br />

If your model has 2500 mesh nodes (or lower), the model will calculate. If your model has more than 2500 mesh nodes you&#8217;ll get a warning.&nbsp;So while defining the&nbsp;geometry and the loads, no notification or warning is given when passing the maximum number of mesh nodes.</p>
<p>What you can do with 2500 mesh nodes highly depends on the choosen mesh size. Below are some example structures with 2400-2500 mesh nodes and an acceptable mesh (not too fine and not too course).</p>

<p>For bar structures, 2500 mesh nodes corresponds to approximately 300 bars.</p>

</ol>
<h3>1. Size</h3>
<p>Play with the maximul element size to obtain a mesh that is not too big or not too small in relation to the dimensions of the model. By this we mean:</p>

<li>Make sure you have about 8 mesh triangles along the shortest side of the plate.<br />
6-7 is fine, 10 is also fine. But 30 is too many. And 3 is too few.</p>

<li>Make sure that thin plate strips contain at least 2 mesh triangles.<br />
You can play with <a href="https://support.buildsoft.eu/knowledge-base/how-to-pick-the-mesh-size/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">advanced mesh settings</a> (minimum element size refinement factor and minimum side distribution) or refine the mesh locally.<br />
If you can&#8217;t get 2 mesh triangles in it, you should consider not modeling that strip.</li>
<li>Make sure that each plate edge contains at least 1 mesh node.<br />
The mesh dimensions are adjusted to the dimensions of the floors. But those mesh dimensions are often too coarse for narrow (masonry) walls. If you want an adequate result in those walls, you must make sure that each plate edge contains at least 1 mesh node.</p>

<p>Each mesh triangle only fulfills the equilibrium equations over its surface, regular triangles give better quality of results. Avoid elongated triangles by playing the maximum and minimum size.</p>

<p>Diamonds checks the consistency of the model by searching for <strong>free edges</strong> (= edges where no other plates connect), thus where the model begins and ends. Free edges are highlighted in a bright green color. Check if the free edges are in the right place!</p>

<p>Speel met de maximale elementgrootte om een mesh te verkrijgen die niet te groot of niet te klein is in verhouding tot de afmetingen van het model. Daarmee bedoelen we:</p>

<li>Zorg dat je ongeveer 8 meshdriehoeken hebt langs de kortste zijde van de plaat.<br />
Heb je er 6-7 is het ook goed. 10 is ook goed. Maar 30 is te veel. En 3 is te weinig.</p>

Als het je niet lukt om er 2 meshdriehoeken in te krijgen, moet je overwegen om die strook niet te modelleren.</li>
<li>Zorg ervoor dat iedere plaatrand minstens 1 meshknoop bevat.<br />
De meshafmetingen worden afgestemd op de afmetingen van de vloeren. Maar die meshafmetingen zijn vaak te grof voor smalle (metselwerk)wandjes. Wil je in die wandjes een adequaat resultaat, dan moet je ervoor zorgen dat iedere plaatrand minstens 1 meshknoop bevat.</p>

<li>Assurez-vous que les bandes de tôle mince contiennent au moins 2 triangles de maille.<br />
Vous pouvez jouer avec <a href="https://support.buildsoft.eu/knowledge-base/how-to-pick-the-mesh-size/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">les paramètres de maillage avancés</a> (facteur de raffinement de la taille minimale des éléments et distribution latérale minimale) ou affiner le maillage localement.<br />
Si vous ne pouvez pas y placer 2 triangles maillés, vous devriez envisager de ne pas modéliser cette bande.</li>
<li>Assurez-vous que chaque bord de plaque contient au moins 1 nœud de maillage.<br />
Les dimensions des mailles sont adaptées aux dimensions des plaques. Mais ces dimensions de maille sont souvent trop grossières pour les murs étroits (souvent en maçonnerie). Si vous souhaitez un résultat adéquat dans ces murs, vous devez vous assurer que chaque bord de plaque contient au moins 1 nœud de maillage.</p>

Diamonds is FEM software. That means the structure will be chopped into smaller pieces ( =&nbsp;<strong>the mesh)</strong>, that are logically linked together. The quality of the results, goes&nbsp;with the quality of the mesh. Garbage in = garbage out. So</p>

<li>first you generate the mesh using logical sizes (see below)</li>

The minimum element size determines the fineness of the mesh around small lines and points that are very close to each other. Don&#8217;t set the minimum element size equal to the maximum element size. Only for standard models (like a 4 sided supported plate) a minimum element size of 0m is acceptable.</li>

<p>In times when it took a while to generate this mesh, this option had his advantages. But in current times this option has less advantages, because badly chosen min/max element size will result in an even worse mesh when you check this option. If you want a smaller mesh, simply change the min/max element size. In calculation time it will not make a difference, but in the quality of the result it will.</li>
<li>Minimum edge division (= the number of mesh points along the boarder of a plate/wall) and refinement factor (= the number of mesh point in the field of a plate/wall)<br />
A good mesh size for the floors,&nbsp;can be too coarse for some walls. Setting the mesh size smaller, will give a good smaller&nbsp;mesh in those walls, but will be too fine in the floors. By increasing both parameters simultaneously, you can obtain a good mesh those smaller walls.</p>

De minimum element grootte bepaald de fijnheid van de mesh rond korte lijntjes en punten die dicht bij elkaar liggen.<br />
Zet de minimum element grootte nooit gelijk aan de maximum, want dan geef je het meshalgoritme geen speling om een goede mesh de maken.<br />
Let op met een minimum element grootte van 0m. Dit kan leiden tot hoge concentraties van kleine meshdriehoekjes. Zeker als je model veel details bevat. In dat geval kan je beter de minimum element grootte iets hoger zetten en/of de details in de geometrie wegwerken.</li>

<p>In tijden dat het even duurde om dit mesh te genereren, had deze optie zijn voordelen. Maar in de huidige versies van Diamonds is dat voordeel weg, omdat een slecht gekozen min/max elementgrootte zal resulteren in een nog slechtere mesh wanneer je deze optie aanvinkt. Als je een kleinere mesh wil, wijzig je beter de min/max elementgrootte. In de berekeningstijd zal het geen verschil maken, maar in de kwaliteit van het resultaat wel.</li>
<li>Minimum zijdeverdeling (= het aantal meshknopen langs de rand van een plaat/wand) en element verfijningsfactor ( = het aantal meshknopen in het veld van de plaat/wand).<br />
Een goede meshafmeting i.f.v. de vloerafmetingen, kan de grof zijn voor smalle wandjes. Als je dan een fijnere meshafmeting kiest, wordt de mesh in de smalle wandjes beter, maar wordt hij te fijn in de vloeren. Door de spelen met de minimum zijdeverdeling en de verfijningsfactor, kan je in die smalle wandjes toch nog een redelijke mesh bekomen.</p>

<li>Met meer verdelingen neemt de rekentijd toe, en nemen de resultaten niet noodzakelijk in kwaliteit toe. Enkel voor geïsoleerde balken op een elastische fundering, kan het waardevol zijn om meer verdelingen te vragen (<a href="https://support.buildsoft.eu/knowledge-base/validation-beam-on-elastic-foundation-hinged-ends/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">zie dit voorbeeld</a>).</li>
<li>Met minder verdelingen neemt de rekentijd af, maar de parabolische vorm wordt minder gedetailleerd.<br />
In grotere modellen (waarin de staven voornamelijk op normaalkracht worden belast), kan het aantal verdelingen op 4 of 6 gezet worden om de rekentijd te beperken.</li>

<p>À une époque où la génération de ce maillage prenait du temps, cette option avait ses avantages. Mais aujourd&#8217;hui, cette option présente moins d&#8217;avantages, car une taille d&#8217;élément min/max mal choisie entraînera un maillage encore pire lorsque vous cochez cette option. Si vous souhaitez un maillage plus petit, modifiez simplement la taille min/max de l&#8217;élément. En termes de temps de calcul, cela ne fera aucune différence, mais cela changera la qualité du résultat.</li>
<li>Division minimale de bord (= le nombre de points de maillage le long de la bordure d&#8217;une plaque/mur) et facteur de raffinement (= le nombre de points de maillage dans le champ d&#8217;une plaque/mur)<br />
Une bonne taille de maillage pour les sols peut être trop grossière pour certains murs. En définissant une taille de maillage plus petite, vous obtiendrez un bon maillage plus petit dans ces murs, mais sera trop fin dans les sols. En augmentant simultanément les deux paramètres, vous pouvez obtenir un bon maillage pour ces murs plus petits.</p>

<li>Avec plus de divisions, le temps de calcul augmentera, alors que les résultats n&#8217;en bénéficieront pas.<br />
Uniquement pour une poutre isolée sur fondation élastique, il peut être judicieux de demander plus de divisions (<a href="https://support.buildsoft.eu/knowledge-base/sll-07/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voir cet exemple</a>).</li>
<li>Avec moins de divisions, le temps de calcul diminuera, mais la forme parabolique sera moins détaillée.<br />
Dans des modèles plus grands (avec des barres principalement chargées en effort axial), le nombre de divisions peut être fixé à 4 ou 6 divisions pour limiter le temps de calcul.</li>

<li>Avec une taille d&#8217;élément minimale égale à 0,1 m, le nombre d&#8217;éléments de maillage dans les poutres les plus courtes est réduit. Le temps de calcul est donc réduit. Étant donné que le comportement complet de la ferme est important et non celui de chaque barre séparément, le maillage ne devrait pas être aussi détaillé.</li>
