BIM Expert is a software that enables users to transfer building information models (BIM) between various modeling & structural applications, a process often referred to as BIM interoperability.

BIM Expert links to the most commonly used modeling applications used in the AEC industry, such as Revit, Tekla Structures, SAP2000 with the click of a button.

Throughout the building design process, structural engineers and architects iterate using a range of 3D modeling & analysis tools. Because different 3D modeling or analysis tools represent the model in different ways, that can lead to difficult exchange of information between engineers and designers. By providing a seamless translation of BIM models, BIM Expert removes these difficulties and makes it possible to synchronize data and geometry across different modeling & analysis tools while respecting the specific standards.

BIM Expert functions as an translator between the different software programs, so that you do not have to rebuild the model in every application.

✓ BIM Expert connects analysis, modelling & detailing applications

BIM Expert connects

Modelling software, such as Revit, Tekla Structures

Analysis software, such as Diamonds, SAP2000, ETABS

Detailing software, such as PowerConnect, Idea StatiCa Connection

✓ BIM Expert creates native elements

When sending models from one application to another, BIM Expert will create native elements and materials in the destination software. ‘Native’ means just like as modeled manually. No weird elements you cannot edit. BIM Expert translates BIM elements from one platform into the other, just like you would have done it yourself.

For example: When sending models to Revit, BIM Expert will create Revit families for the steel profiles. You do not have to do it yourself.

✓ BIM Expert has both physical as analytical data

Because BIM Expert communicates with both analysis & modelling applications, the BIM Expert file contains both the analysis as the physical model. Multiple analysis models can be stored with one physical model.

✓ BIM Expert keeps as much information as possible

BIM Expert does not store geometry data, but also structural behavior (eg. tie rods, non-linear supports, … ), loads & load combinations, mesh settings, design code choices, results and connections. Even if the destination software does not support certain information, BIM Expert keeps this data linked to the model, for a round trip or a next model transfer.

BIM Expert files can be exchanged locally or over network:

On a local exchange, there is one user who sends files between the start application, BIM Expert and the destination platform. This requires the license ‘BIM Expert Local’. Clearly the user also disposes of a start and destination platform license, relevant for the intended workflow, e.g. Diamonds, Revit, Tekla Structures…

BIM Expert facilitates 3 primary workflows:

One Way: This the most common used model transfer, and is the basis for all other workflows. A one way transfer refers to the process of translating a 3D BIM model from one linked BIM Expert platform, to another via the BIM Expert service and relevant plugin.

One way example: From Tekla to Revit

Round Trip: A round trip transfer takes this process to the the next logical step, and refers to the a method of updating the original platform model with changes/ attributes that were picked up during the process of working on the model in the destination platform. BIM Expert is able to register changes to objects and attributes and apply these to as updates or additions to the model.

Round Trip example:
From Tekla to PowerConnect to Tekla

Multi Step: A multi-step transfer is a series of one-way workflows and round trips. A multi-step refers to the process of translation a 3D BIM model from on linked BIM Expert platform to multiple others, in series or parallel paths.

Multi-step example:
From SAP2000 to Tekla to PowerConnect to Tekla
From Tekla to Idea Statica Connection
From SAP2000 to Diamonds
